The demands of being a new mother are numerous but many may be shocked by new results of research conducted by American Baby magazine and the advocacy group Safe Kids Worldwide. Their survey reveals some rather alarming statistics about the driving habits of new mothers. The survey concludes that 78% of new mothers (mothers with children under the age of 2) admit to using their cell phone while driving with their children. Even more troubling, over a quarter of the mothers surveyed admitted to texting while driving, and more than half admit to turning their head to attend to their child in the back seat.
The added distractions while driving translate to an increased rate in car accidents. The survey estimates that new mothers get into car accidents about as often as teenagers. Being a new mother is challenging enough without having to worry about car accidents, personal injuries, or uninsured motorists.
